Eczema is a nuisance, there’s no doubt about it. It may seem that eczema can ‘flair up’ whenever and wherever, be it in the car, the workplace, at home or in your garden. Whats important however, is understanding what sets it off, and how it can be prevented.

Here are 5 simple tips that you can use to help reduce your eczema:

#1 – Discover Which Foods Cause Eczema To Flair Up

Everyone is different, and foods which affect some people with their eczema may not affect others. Therefore, most people use trial and error to find out which food affects people the most in order to create their diet around it.

The most common foods which cause eczema are:

Milk
Eggs
Peanuts
Wheat and Soya
Seafood

There are also a few common additives that can cause eczema, which include:

Sodium Glutamate
Tartrazine
Sodium Metabisulphite
Sodium Benzoate

#2 – Moisturise To Reduce Eczema

Keeping the skin moisturised is extremely important for reducing eczema, as dry skin can flair up much quicker. Also, using soap can remove the natural oils in the skin, which can make it more sensitive to irritants.

There are a large number of products on the market today which can reduce eczema, many of which work well, many of which don’t work so well. Personally, I have always used Aveeno eczema products and I have never had any problems with them. Not only that, but my eczema hasn’t come up in at least 3 years now, mainly due to their products.

#3 – Getting Rid Of Dust Mites

Dust mites are a common allergy, and it doesn’t help when they are ubiquitous in your home. Unfortunately, this allergy is often related to eczema, so its important to know how to reduce them.

Note, if you have mild eczema which can be controlled using treatments, then this may be a lot of work for little benefit:

1. Avoid soft furnishing in the bedroom.
2. Remove carpets from the bedroom.
3. Use feather rather than synthetic pillows.
4. Vacuum or clean the bedroom floor regularly.
5. Wet-dust the bedroom furniture every 1-2 weeks.
6. Vacuum the mattress once a week.
7. Try to keep humidity low.
8. Regularly ventilate the bedroom (open the door and a window for a while on most days).

#4 – Use Vitamin Supplements In Your Diet

Finally, getting the right vitamins in your diet can significantly reduce eczema. The best vitamins you can take to reduce your eczema are:

Evening primrose oil
Fish oil
Zinc.

Just taking these once in a while can help in the long term, especially if you feel that you aren’t getting enough of these vitamins in your current diet.

#5 – Stress, and how it can affect your eczema

Many people believe that eczema can flair up due to stress, and in a sense that is true. However, it is because people commonly ‘habit scratch’ when they are stressed that eczema can occur.

There are many different exercises that you can find on the internet to help you to reduce stress, as well as different products (such as stress balls, aromatherapy, meditation aids etc…). Most of the time however you may find that taking a 10 minute break can help, especially if the stress is work related.

All the best.
