What is Eczema?

Eczema is the most common term used by people when they refer to any kind of skin inflammation or irritation. Some of the other words used to describe this would be dermatitis or atopic dermatitis. There are many different types or forms of eczema.

People of all ages can be affected with skin problems or eczema. But eczema is known to be more profound in children and even more in girls. Roughly around 85% of children who are five years or below are known to be easily affected with eczema. But the good news is that it tends to go away or cures by itself by the time the child turns three years old. Eczema can be passed through genetics. It travels through blood. Most often it can be triggered with other family history of allergies like hay fever or asthma. There are kids who do not get cured by the age of three, in such cases eczema can and should be treated. It is common to people of all skin colour and all races.

Eczema by itself is not and was never contagious. You cannot get affected by it just by touching someone who has eczema. But since a lot of people believe that it is indeed inherited partially, it is obviously not a surprise that there may be other people of the same family who may be affected by it.

What are the causes of Eczema?

Well, the fact is that even the doctors do not exactly know what the causes of eczema are but they do know that eczema is the defect of the skin that becomes a barrier and stops the skin from performing its duties. The immune system also is caused to perform abnormal functions. After a lot of research it was said that eczema was caused by the defects of genes and that it lead to abnormalities.

Other times eczema is said to be caused when the skin comes in touch or in contact with things like soap, clothing, jewellery, deodorants, cosmetics and other stuff. Outbreaks of eczema can be caused by the environmental allergens like the change in temperature. In other situations psychological distress can also be the cause for eczema in people.

What are Eczema symptoms?

Eczema symptoms most commonly begin with skin irritation and itching. Another one of the eczema symptoms can be the dryness of skin. It itches and burns, and often the skin is reddened in those areas. The truth is that eczema symptoms vary from person to person. There are different types of eczema and different eczema symptoms for each kind.
